Kefalonian Lifestyle

Kefalonia has more to offer the visitor and the resident than any other island in the Mediterranean with its fertile land, secluded beaches, mysterious caves and outstanding Mediterranean scenerios. The island has been endowed with a rich cultural legacy that goes back 5000 years. The great ancient civilisations of the island have left behind some of the finest archaeological remains amongst the Ionian Islands.

Travel from the beautiful coasts into the breathtaking fir forests; visit Ainos Mountain Range in the winter for trekking expeditions and other winter sports, experience an outstanding combination of colours in the springtime, endless blue skies and sunshine in the summer, explore numerous known and unknown caves, enjoy wind surfing and sailing during the summer season, shake hands with the locals, whose reputation for hospitality, arts and good food is nationwide, and you'll want to stay forever.

Soft sea breezes blow onto the inland to create a wonderfully healthy year-round climate where plenty tropical plants grow. After all Kefalonia is the 2nd sunniest place in Greece. Not only the climate, but also the relatively low cost of living make Kefalonia an attractive place for a holiday home, second home, or place for retirement. The island's outstanding natural beauty, the low rate of crime and the stable national economy also contribute to the advantages of buying real estate in Kefalonia.

The summer is long and hot, however the mild wind keeps things cool. The winter is mild, especially up to the end of the year, but the first three months of the year can be wet. Apart from in mountainous and hillside areas, there is rarely frost or snow.

Those of you who have found their dream place during holidays in Kefalonia and are seriously considering to buy a house here but do not speak the language, should consult a lawyer about any legal matters. The Greek language is a beautiful and rich language, but it is difficult to learn quickly. The vast majority of Greek people speak fluent English especially in Kefalonia where tourism and merchant navy provide high employment. You will not find any difficulty communicating with the locals or conducting your business at the island’s private or public organisations. Greek people are very hospitable and welcoming. Locals welcome foreign holiday visitors and it is a tradition to provide warm welcome to people who buy properties and live on the island.

Finally, may we take this opportunity to welcome all of you who have decided to move to Kefalonia. This is a place with fascinating blend landscape, climate, history and culture. Kefalonia is the perfect place for that second home and certainly the ideal place for retirement.
